Your first visit

New patients

If you have never seen a chiropractor before, or if you’re a first-timer to CHIROWORx, it is understandable that you may have a few questions about what your first visit will entail.

Check out the information below to learn more about your initial visit and how you can be prepared to make the most of your time at CHIROWORx. We look forward to meeting you and showing you why CHIROWORx is a favorite among Baltimore chiropractors!

I was nervous for my first visit to CHIROWORx because I had never been to a chiropractor before. But as soon as I walked in the office the nervousness went away – the staff was super nice and friendly and made me feel right at home. Thanks, Dr. Barrett, Joe, and Kelli!

You can generally expect your first time at CHIROWORx to be similar to a first visit to any other healthcare provider. You’ll fill out patient intake forms, undergo an overall health evaluation, begin your treatment, get a chiropractic adjustment, and discuss a follow-up plan with the doctor.

But first, the paperwork! Part of your initial visit to CHIROWORx Spine & Rehab involves providing the information that enables Dr. Barrett to care for you and your specific health condition effectively. You will answer questions about your health history, current state of health, and whatever condition you are seeking treatment for. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your first appointment to give yourself ample time to fill out the forms thoroughly. This information is integral in making sure that you get the best care possible. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions!

When Dr. Barrett first meets you, he will discuss your health history with you to ensure that he understands your current condition thoroughly. Bringing any previously taken X-rays or MRIs to your first appointment will ensure that Dr. Barrett has a complete picture of your health history.

Next, Dr. Barrett will perform an examination of your spine, posture, and body alignment, testing for spinal flexibility and muscle activity. Dr. Barrett has a number of tools and tests at his disposal that allow him to determine which tissues, bones, ligaments, and tendons are affected by your condition, and to what extent.

Dr. Barrett may decide to perform further orthopedic tests to further evaluate any areas of pain. With this information, he can narrow down the areas of your spine that need a closer look and will determine whether yours is a chiropractic problem or if a referral to another practitioner is needed.

Your specific condition may require Dr. Barrett to take X-rays to either rule out more serious conditions or to assist him in developing the most effective treatment plan for you. You and the doctor will also discuss scheduling your next session, at which point Dr. Barrett will present your complete report of findings. Generally, the second session is scheduled within a few days of your initial appointment.

After reviewing your health history, goals, and the results of your examination, Dr. Barrett will take a few days to interpret your test results and to draft a report of findings outlining your diagnosis and proposed treatment plan. Dr. Barrett will discuss the report of findings with you in detail, explaining the musculoskeletal issues that are at the root of your symptoms and discussing the treatment options he has determined will bring you back to health.

Dr. Barrett considers your lifestyle choices and health and wellness goals when preparing your report of findings. Taking these into consideration is crucial to reliving your pain at its root and to creating sustainable health solutions that will keep you healthy for years to come.

Your report of findings also includes recommendations about the suggested length and regularity of care at CHIROWORx and a financial plan to cover your treatment. At the end of your session, you will have all the information you need about your condition and its treatment options to make an informed and empowered decision about moving forward with your care plan.

After you and Dr. Barrett have discussed your report of findings, you will schedule your next session to begin treatment. Keep in mind that it common for multiple sessions to be recommended in your treatment plan – often the pain that you feel is the result of months or even years of musculoskeletal misalignment. Correcting the root cause of these conditions is generally not a one-time effort. Ongoing care is common for those with chronic or severe pain, which can mean regular weekly sessions and then less frequent sessions as your condition improves.

It is common for your custom care plan to include various forms of treatment to get to the root of your pain. Dr. Barrett may attack your pain with chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapies, Rock Taping sessions, or physical therapy exercises – or more likely, a combination of all four. Dr. Barrett is committed to giving you a voice in your treatment plan, so be sure to voice your thoughts and concerns about the different styles of treatment as they arise.
